Job Description for a Donut Maker at a Bakery

Often working in the early morning, donut makers prepare ingredients and operate machines for the baking of donuts. They must follow recipes for donuts, and at times may also be responsible for the baking of other pastries. Donut makers are often trained after they have been hired.

Experience

Those who have had coursework in culinary studies or food service will be favored for positions over less-educated applicants. Donut makers often receive training on-the-job.

Skills

To qualify for the position of a donut maker, applicants must be able to follow directions. They must also pay close attention to detail to ensure the correct ingredients are used in specific recipes.

Responsibilities

Donut makers mix the ingredients for dough in preparation for baking. A machine combines the ingredients, which the donut maker then puts into the dumping machine, which releases the dough into the fryer. He manages the dumping machine to ensure it does not overlap the mix. He turns the donuts once the first side has fried for one to two minutes. Once the donuts have fried evenly on both sides, he lifts the tray from the fryer and places the donuts on the glazing table. The donut maker lifts the glazer to release glaze evenly over the tray of donuts.

The donut maker is responsible for adding various toppings to each tray of donuts according to the morning requirements or the demand for each kind throughout the day.

Donut makers may also be responsible for baking muffins, bagels and other pastries. Depending upon the size of the company, donut makers may also have to handle customer transactions and the preparation of other goods, such as coffee or breakfast sandwiches.

Compensation

The average annual salary for bakers in 2008 was $23,290, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Salaries may vary by company. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the demand for highly skilled bakers to increase.

Environment

Donut makers can work in commercial bakery distributors or in small retail stores. They operate heavy machinery, such as mixers, ovens and fryers. The environment is hot and often noisy. They often work early in the morning to ensure donuts are ready for the morning rush.
