.NET Developer Job Description

Microsoft .NET is a software development component that provides tools and libraries to assist software developers in creating Windows-based applications that are easier, faster and more robust. Often referred to as .NET Framework, this tool is used primarily for web applications. A .NET developer is a software programmer who has specific skills using .NET and related programming tools to develop software and computer applications.

Education Requirements

Most employers require a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or a related discipline. .NET developer occupations are in high demand, so employers may overlook educational requirements if a job seeker has extensive experience with .NET development tools and related systems or software.

Qualifications and Skills

Employers require these professionals to have object-oriented design and programming experience using systems, databases and programming languages that develop software applications with the .NET framework. This experience can include programming skills using C#, XML and Java Enterprise Edition, as well as database applications such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle.

Job Responsibilities

Using .NET components and working with software engineers and architects, these professionals develop a logical series of instructions referred to as programming code for the computer to communicate with networks, applications and databases. This task can require using a number of different programming skills to allow the software or application to function properly. A .NET developer may create new software applications, modify, repair or improve existing applications, and may also test applications for functionality.

.NET Salaries and Prospects

A Visual Studio survey reported that the average base salary of .NET developers in the November 2012 survey was $94,391. Graduates of four-year colleges earned an average of $91,646. Women earned less then men. Salaries were highest in Washington, D.C., San Francisco and New York City. The survey indicated that nearly 90 percent of those surveyed expected to be working in .NET development in the next five years. The majority of respondents were satisfied with their careers.
