Ask for a Job From Previous Coworkers

Networking can be the key to getting ahead in your career. Your former co-workers create a network for you of potential contacts and employers. Exploit this network by asking your former colleagues for a job. While they may not be able to give you a job directly, they can at the very least help you to land a job.

Get back in touch with previous coworkers who may have job leads for you. Find your former coworkers on social networks like Google Plus (plus.google.com), Facebook (facebook.com), or LinkedIn (linkedin.com) which is specifically designed for business connections. Alternatively, ask coworkers that you are still in touch with, to put you into contact with former coworkers.

Contact your former coworker and tell her that you are looking for work. Explain what you have done since you worked together and ask about opportunities with her firm. Richard Nelson Bolles, author of "The Job-Hunter's Survival Guide" recommends that you ask about the opportunities before asking for a job so that you can see if there is anything appropriate available.

Ask your former coworker how to apply for the job. In most circumstances you still need to follow the standard job application procedure.

Ask your former colleague for a reference. She should have a good sense both of your capabilities and the job's responsibilities. Therefore, she should be able to explain your fit for the job.

Ask your old coworker for information about the job and the company in general. If possible, arrange to meet to discuss the opportunity. This prepares you for the interview by giving you insight into the company and the work you will be doing.
