Furniture Carpenter Jobs

Carpentry is a popular field, but there are many different kinds of carpenters. Those who work as furniture carpenters require different skills than people who build houses.

History

While carpentry has been around a while, the more delicate furniture carpentry is newer. Once people started constructing dwellings, they did not immediately begin building tables, chairs and beds. They sat on the floor, and they slept on straw or woven cloth. Eventually, however, they started working on making places to sleep and places to sit. They found that they could use wood and carve it, shape it and fit it together to make things that they never had before. Additionally, they discovered they could make existing items more convenient. Carpentry in the general sense has been around since Biblical times, as Jesus was a carpenter. It was also a very popular occupation in Medieval times. There were guilds of carpenters during that time and by the fifteenth century carpenters were using many of the same tools that they use today. Furniture carpenters, general carpenters and other woodworking professions had different social standings, as well.

Function

Furniture carpentry requires more than just common sense in working with wood. Furniture carpenters make all types of furniture, from large pieces that go in grand houses to furniture for the smallest of dollhouses. Some of them work together to create different kinds of furniture, such as large pieces that have a lot of intricacies. Furniture carpenters go to school to learn their basic trade, and they also apprentice with other carpenters to get more comfortable and to further hone their skills. Once they have completed an apprenticeship, they can become master carpenters.

Types

Carpentry has many varieties. There are rough carpenters who frame houses and finish carpenters who do finer work such as baseboards and trim. There are carpenters who even do finer work still and make cabinetry and other intricate pieces for homes and businesses. In addition, there are carpenters who make nothing but furniture, and the types of furniture they make can also differ greatly. If someone has a job as a furniture carpenter, he or she is a specialist and can likely do the job with high quality.

Misconceptions

The most common complaint people have with carpenters is that they do not understand why the person who framed their house cannot make their cabinets or build them a dining room set, because they think that it will be less expensive that way. Not only would it likely end up costing more, but they really would not want someone who has never made a table and chairs to make the dining set that will be in their home for many years. Furniture carpentry is much more than just cutting some wood and putting it together. There are math skills involved, and many furniture carpenters also have architectural and design skill, as they come up with their own drawings and plans for the furniture they create.

Potential

The future looks bright for furniture carpentry jobs. During times when the economy is struggling and there are problems with the housing market it is only to be expected that those who build furniture may see their businesses slow. However, there will always be people who are moving from place to place, upgrading and renting, buying and furnishing houses. These people may choose to buy new furniture. Some of them will buy it from chain stores, some from upscale retailers and some from custom furniture dealers. One thing for sure is that there will be a need for furniture carpenters to create these items.
