Presentation Specialist Job Description

Businesses often have to strike enormous deals with other businesses and high-profile clients. In order to convince other parties that a particular product is superior to all other products on the market, marketing and sales teams meet with clients and present products. The PowerPoint presentations they sometimes use are often created by presentation specialists.

Function

Presentation specialists use software technologies such as PowerPoint to brand company products for sales and marketing, according to Bayview Asset Management. These presentation specialists work with the presenters to create PowerPoint presentations that will clearly express the information that the company wants to get across, while also appealing to the audience aesthetically and persuasively. This can include the use of text, graphics and plugged-in features such as graphs. Whenever there is an issue with the PowerPoint program, the presentation specialist must troubleshoot this problem. To develop effective brand synergy--the effectiveness of creating appealing and marketable products--the presentation specialist works closely with the marketing department.

Conditions

Since presentations often have dates that are not easily changed, presentation specialists work under strict deadlines and can be placed under considerable stress when presentation deadlines are near. Night and weekend work is sometimes required to meet deadlines. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, long hours in front of the computer can lead to eyestrain and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Skills

A bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising or computer graphics technology is needed to become a presentation specialist. Thorough PowerPoint proficiency is essential for a presentation specialist. Many presentation specialists will also be expected to have proficiency with Adobe PDF Professional and Adobe PhotoShop, according to Bayview Asset Management. Since the PowerPoint program can sometimes use a variety of file types, presentation specialists must have experience with PNG, JPEG, GIF, EPS and other image file types. Excellent written communication skills are necessary since the clarity of the presentation slides is key in creating compelling PowerPoint presentations. Design sense and conceptual skills will also be needed. Since the presentation specialist will be working with different departments, interpersonal skills are needed.

Outlook

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for presentation specialists such as desktop publishers is expected to decline by 23 percent as software becomes so easy that inexperienced workers can use it. However, presentation specialists with more of a background in marketing or advertising can enjoy 13 percent growth between 2008 and 2018.

Earnings

The median earnings for desktop publishers in 2008 were $36,600, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest 10 percent earned more than $59,210 and the lowest 10 percent earned less than $21,860.
