IRS Seasonal Jobs

The Internal Revenue Service offers seasonal job opportunities during tax season in various locations across the country. The main tax season runs from January through May, though seasonal jobs are also available during other times of the year. Positions for data transcribers, tax return examiners and customer contact representatives are typically available. The jobs are offered by the Department of the Treasury. United States citizens and federal employees are eligible to apply.

IRS Seasonal Job Search

To search for and apply for seasonal employment, go to the IRS Jobs Page online at irs.usajobs.gov. Use the search tool and keywords to find seasonal job titles, locations, schedules and pay scales. Many seasonal IRS opportunities are located in states with regional IRS offices such as Texas, Kentucky, California, Missouri and West Virginia. Once you find a job you’re interested in, you may view its full description including salary and benefits. You can apply online, save the job or share the job listing on social networking sites.

Schedules and Requirements

Most seasonal IRS positions are either full-time or intermittent temporary jobs. A clerk might work Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the day shift or from 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on the swing shift. Hours and days are not prearranged. Day shift positions are filled first and remaining positions are filled on the swing shift. A tax examining technician might work full-time Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the night shift. Clerks need to be have six months of clerical experience. Tax examining technicians must have a bachelor’s degree or at least one year of experience processing financial documents. All candidates must successfully complete a background check, including an FBI fingerprint check.
